A handmade Sapphire Tree of Life for a September birthday or a 45th sapphire anniversary: 46 small faceted natural sapphire spheres in deep navy blue, almost blue-black, each one wired by hand onto a little tree and set in a white ceramic bowl with white pebbles. The bowl can carry two names, a wedding date or a short line of your own, so the tree can say "45 years" on its own.

Sapphire is a form of corundum, the same mineral as ruby, and its blue comes from small traces of iron and titanium in the crystal. In crystal tradition it is a stone of loyalty, wisdom and calm. It is the birthstone of September, shared by Virgo and Libra, and 65 years of marriage is also called a sapphire jubilee.

THE SAPPHIRE A PRINCE GAVE THE NIGHT BEFORE HIS WEDDING

On the evening of 9 February 1840, the day before their wedding, Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a large sapphire brooch set round with diamonds. She pinned it to her wedding dress the next morning, and that night she wrote in her journal that her jewels were her Turkish diamond necklace and earrings and "dear Albert's beautiful sapphire brooch". Seven years later she wore it again in the wedding portrait Franz Xaver Winterhalter painted as an anniversary present for Albert. The brooch stayed one of her most treasured pieces, and she left it to the Crown so that it would always belong to the sovereign. It is still among the royal jewels today.
