A handmade Apatite Tree of Life in lagoon teal: 46 small polished natural apatite spheres in blues and greens, some bright like shallow water over sand, some deeper like the reef edge where the bottom drops away. Each one is wired by hand onto a little tree set in a white ceramic bowl with white pebbles that you can personalize with a name, a dive site or the date of a first dive.

The name apatite comes from the Greek apatan, to deceive, because it was so often mistaken for other minerals. In crystal tradition it is a stone of clarity and motivation, and it is often linked with the sign of Scorpio. On 8 June the United Nations marks World Oceans Day, a good day to give something the colour of a lagoon.

THE SAME MINERAL AS A SHARK'S TOOTH

Divers who find a shark's tooth on the sand are holding a cousin of this stone. The hard, shiny outer layer of a shark's tooth is made of tiny crystals of fluorapatite, one of the minerals of the apatite group, and it is this mineral that makes the tooth so strong. Apatite is also the mineral that marks 5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, the scale geologists use to compare how hard minerals are. Its colours range widely, from green and yellow to violet, and some of the brightest blue and teal apatite comes from Madagascar, an island in the Indian Ocean known for its reefs.
