A handmade Ruby Tree of Life for a July birthday or a 40th ruby anniversary: 46 small faceted natural ruby spheres in shades from pinkish red to deep red, each one wired by hand onto a little tree and set in a white ceramic bowl with white pebbles. The bowl can carry a name, a wedding date or a few words of your own, so the tree can say "40 years" without a card.

The word ruby comes from the Latin ruber, red. Ruby is a form of corundum, the same mineral as sapphire, and its red comes from traces of chromium in the crystal. In crystal tradition it is a stone of love, passion and courage. It is the birthstone of July, shared by Cancer and Leo, and the gem of the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.

THE RED STONE BEHIND THE FIRST LASER

On 16 May 1960, at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, the physicist Theodore Maiman switched on the first working laser. Its heart was a small cylinder of pink synthetic ruby, about 1 cm wide and 2 cm long, with both ends polished flat and coated with silver, set inside the spiral flash lamp of a photographer's flash. When the lamp fired, the chromium in the ruby answered with a pulse of pure red light. Maiman's team announced the result at a press conference in New York on 7 July 1960, and a ruby crystal from those first experiments is now kept at the Smithsonian.
