Howlite is named after Henry How, the Nova Scotia chemist who described it in 1868. In crystal tradition it is a stone of calm and patience, and it is often linked with the sign of Pisces. WHERE ROBIN'S EGG BLUE COMES FROM

The blue of a robin's egg is made by the bird itself. As the American robin forms each egg, it lays down a pigment called biliverdin in the shell, the same blue green pigment the body makes when it breaks down haem from old red blood cells, and the one that turns a healing bruise briefly green. The more biliverdin, the brighter the blue, so the shade changes a little from egg to egg. The colour was so familiar that robin's egg blue became a colour name in its own right, first recorded in English in 1873, and it is still used for paints, ceramics and gift boxes today.
