A large handmade Dendritic Opal Tree of Life in milky white and charcoal: 280 polished natural dendritic opal spheres in white to soft cream with a gentle satin sheen, about half of them marked with grey to black dendrites, from tiny specks to fine, fern like branches, the others plain white, like ink drawings on rice paper. Each one is wired by hand onto a full, generous tree set in a white ceramic bowl that you can personalize with your names, a date or a photo.
Opal is a birthstone of October and a traditional gift for a 14th wedding anniversary, and in crystal tradition dendritic opal is a stone of growth, patience and calm, often linked with the sign of Libra. Its quiet white and charcoal pattern makes this tree a refined gift for a 14th anniversary or an October birthday, and a natural fit for a minimalist or Japandi home.
THE STONES NAMED AFTER A COFFEE PORT
In the 1700s European collectors prized white and grey stones with tiny black trees inside and called them mocha stones. The name is usually linked to Mocha, now Al Mukha, a port on the Red Sea coast of Yemen, the same harbour that gave its name to mocha coffee, through which such stones reached Europe. Samuel Johnson described the mocha stone in his dictionary of 1755. Later, English potters copied the branching patterns on cups and jugs, a style still known as mochaware.
