THE JADEITE CABBAGE
One of the most loved objects in the National Palace Museum in Taipei is a cabbage. It is a Qing dynasty carving, under 19 cm long, cut from a single piece of jadeite that was part green and part white. The unknown carver turned the green into leaves and the white into the stalk, hid the cracks among the veins and set a locust and a katydid on the leaves. It once stood in the Palace of Eternal Harmony in the Forbidden City, home of Consort Jin of the Guangxu Emperor, and it is often said, though never proven, to have been part of her dowry.
