THE WANDERING PEARL, LA PEREGRINA

La Peregrina, "the wanderer", is a pear-shaped natural pearl first recorded in Seville in 1579, when it was brought from Panama for King Philip II of Spain. It stayed with the Spanish crown for more than two centuries, then passed to Joseph Bonaparte and later to the Dukes of Abercorn, whose duchess lost it twice, once in a sofa and once at a ball, and found it both times. In 1969 Richard Burton bought it at auction for $37,000 as a gift for Elizabeth Taylor. Soon after, in a Las Vegas hotel suite, she found it in her puppy's mouth, unharmed. In 2011 it sold for more than $11 million.
