White Howlite Tree of Life – Gift for a Writer, 46 Natural Howlite Stones, Copper, Silver or Gold Wire, Personalized Bowl

A handmade White Howlite Tree of Life in paper white and pencil grey: 46 small polished natural howlite spheres, white as a fresh page and traced with fine grey veins like pencil lines in the margin of a notebook. Each one is wired by hand onto a little tree set in a white ceramic bowl with white pebbles that you can personalize with a name, a book title or a favourite line for someone who is always writing.

In crystal tradition howlite is a stone of calm, patience and clear thoughts, and it is often linked with the sign of Gemini, the storyteller of the zodiac. On 21 March the world marks World Poetry Day, a good day to give a writer something quiet and white for the desk.

THE NUISANCE IN THE GYPSUM

In the 1860s the gypsum quarries around Windsor, in Nova Scotia, kept turning up hard white nodules that the miners found a nuisance. They showed them to Henry How, professor of chemistry and natural history at King's College in Windsor, who analysed them and in 1868 described a new mineral, a rare silicate borate he called silicoborocalcite. Shortly afterwards the American mineralogist James Dwight Dana renamed it howlite in his honour.
