PINK FROM THE INSIDE

For a long time nobody knew exactly why rose quartz is pink. In 2001 scientists found the answer in the stone itself: microscopic fibres of a mineral related to dumortierite, spread through the quartz, give it its soft colour. Rose quartz usually grows in solid masses, and well-formed rose quartz crystals were unknown until 1959, when miners digging for mica at the Berilo Branco mine, near Sapucaia in Minas Gerais, Brazil, opened a pocket lined with pink crystals.
