Red Coral Tree of Life – Christening & Godchild Gift from Godparents, 46 Coral Stones, Copper, Silver or Gold Wire, Personalized Bowl

A handmade Red Coral Tree of Life in poppy red: 46 small polished coral spheres in the bright, warm red of a poppy in a summer field, each one a little different in tone. Each one is wired by hand onto a little tree set in a white ceramic bowl with white pebbles that you can personalize with a child's name, the date of the christening or a few words from the godparents. It is a little heirloom for a high nursery shelf or a bookcase, and years later it can move to a teenager's desk.

Coral was long seen as a token of protection for children, which is why it so often appears in christening gifts. In crystal tradition red coral is a stone of vitality and warmth, and it is linked with the sign of Cancer.

THE CORAL AND BELLS

For centuries one of the classic christening presents had a name of its own: the coral and bells. It was a small silver rattle with a whistle at one end, little bells around the middle and a polished stick of red coral at the other, which the baby could bite on while teething. Coral was cool against sore gums and was believed to keep a child safe. In 1706 the Countess of Lauderdale noted that she had bought "a silver gumstick with bells and a piece of fine coral", and you can see rattles like this in the hands of children in family portraits of the 1700s and 1800s. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London still keeps one made around 1750. This little tree carries on the same idea in a form that stays on the shelf: red coral, a name and a date, given by the people who promised to look out for the child.
