BEADS FROM THE INDUS

Carnelian has been shaped into beads for thousands of years. Craftsmen of the Indus civilisation, at cities such as Harappa and Lothal, drilled long carnelian beads and decorated some with white etched patterns. Their beads travelled west by trade, and etched carnelian beads were found in the Royal Cemetery of Ur in Mesopotamia, in graves from around 2600 to 2500 BC, including the tomb of Queen Puabi.
