THE EMPRESS AND THE PINK MINES OF CALIFORNIA

Around 1900 the biggest buyer of pink tourmaline in the world was the imperial court of China. The Empress Dowager Cixi loved its colour, and carvers made it into snuff bottles, buttons and jewellery. Much of it came from San Diego County in California, where mines such as the Himalaya at Mesa Grande sent around 120 tons of pink tourmaline to China between 1902 and 1910. Cixi died in 1908, and when the Qing dynasty fell in 1912 the trade collapsed almost overnight, leaving the California mines without their best customer.
