THE CORAL TOWN BY VESUVIUS

Torre del Greco, a town on the Bay of Naples at the foot of Vesuvius, has fished and carved red coral for centuries. In 1805 King Ferdinand IV gave Paolo Bartolomeo Martin, a businessman from Marseille, a ten year privilege to open a coral workshop there, on condition that he train local workers. The craft grew quickly, and in 1878 a royal decree founded a school for coral working in the town, teaching drawing, carving and engraving. Torre del Greco is still known as the coral capital of Italy.
