We shape it entirely by hand from gold-plated copper wire and set 54 natural white freshwater pearls of 8-10 mm at the tips of its branches, so the white pearls glow against the warm gold. The roots hold white stones in a glossy white ceramic bowl, which you can keep plain or personalize with names, a date or a photo.

Pearls have long stood for purity, loyalty and a love that grows layer by layer over the years, just as a pearl does. Pearl is also the birthstone of June and a traditional stone for Gemini and Cancer, which makes this tree a thoughtful birthday gift as well.

A PRINCESS'S PEARLS AND A GOLDEN WEDDING, LONDON

On the morning of her wedding, 20 November 1947, Princess Elizabeth planned to wear two pearl necklaces given to her by her parents, the Queen Anne and the Queen Caroline pearls. They were still on display with the wedding presents at St James's Palace. Her private secretary, Jock Colville, was sent to fetch them, and he made it through the crowds in time thanks to King Haakon VII of Norway, who let him take his car. Her wedding ring was made from a nugget of Welsh gold from the Clogau St David's mine. Fifty years later, at the golden wedding lunch at Banqueting House in 1997, the Queen said of Prince Philip that he had, quite simply, been her strength and stay all these years.
