We shape it entirely by hand as a bonsai with a thick, curving trunk and layered branches, and set 79 natural white freshwater pearls along its crown. The roots hold white stones in a glossy white ceramic bowl, which you can keep plain or personalize with names, a date or a photo.

Pearls have long stood for purity, loyalty and a love that grows layer by layer over the years, just as a pearl does. Pearl is also the birthstone of June and a traditional stone for Gemini and Cancer, which makes this bonsai a thoughtful birthday gift as well.

THE PEACE TREE, HIROSHIMA

For almost four centuries one Japanese white pine bonsai stayed with the Yamaki family of Hiroshima, in training since 1625. On 6 August 1945 the atomic bomb exploded about three kilometres from their walled nursery. The blast blew out the windows of the family home, yet the family survived and the pine stood unharmed. In 1976 bonsai master Masaru Yamaki gave it to the United States as part of Japan's Bicentennial gift of 53 bonsai, without mentioning its past. Only in March 2001, when his grandsons Shigeru and Akira visited the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, D.C., did the museum learn that the tree had survived Hiroshima. It is now known as the Peace Tree.
