A handmade Lapis Lazuli Tree of Life in deep blue: 46 small polished natural lapis lazuli spheres in royal and night blue with flecks of white and gold, like a palette of ultramarine paint. Each one is wired by hand onto a little tree set in a white ceramic bowl with white pebbles that you can personalize with a name, a studio name or a few words for someone who always has paint on their fingers.

In crystal tradition lapis lazuli is a stone of wisdom, truth and inspiration, and it is often linked with the sign of Sagittarius. On 15 April, the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, the world marks World Art Day, a good day to give a painter a little tree of blue.

THE BLUE FROM BEYOND THE SEA

For about 6,000 years lapis lazuli has been mined in the mountains of Badakhshan, in northeast Afghanistan, at Sar-e-Sang. Ground and purified, it became ultramarine, the precious blue of medieval and Renaissance painting, whose name means beyond the sea, because it reached Europe from far across the water. Titian used it for the sky in Bacchus and Ariadne, and it stayed rare and costly until a synthetic ultramarine was invented in France in the 1820s.
